The aircraft is used to drop paratroopers, carry troops and combat material including medium-sized battle tanks. It is equipped with a defensive aids suite, comprising a radar warner, infrared flare cartridges and two guns. It first flew on March 25, 1971, and is still in production in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
